International Writers Inspiring Change presents our Featured Book Review: The Doomsong Legend

Updated: Feb 7

The Doomsong Legend is a delight! Harlond takes us on an adventure filled with drama, action and some real heartfelt moments. The story has turned from a sea adventure into the dangers and perils of landing in a foreign country, where plots and intrigues seethe beneath the surface and more questions are raised then answers given regarding the Doomsong sword and all who handle it. The relationships and characters are so well drawn and Katranina is especially roguishly charming. Compelling and thrilling, the skillful weaving of Celtic, Norse and even a hint of Arthurian legend and culture in this tale contribute to make it truly worthy of any Norse skald.

"Compelling and thrilling! Harlond takes us on an adventure filled with drama, action and some real heartfelt moments."

- Kristin Gleeson, author of ‘Rise of the Celtic Gods’ series.

The Doomsong Legend, by J.G. Harlond, is a classic Nordic-style mythological fantasy. The story follows the so-called Doomsong Sword, a sword which has great potential and power, but only in the right hands. It's guardian at the time, a village elder, hands it over to a young man by the name of Finn, who is leading his clan of Norse people who are, at that very moment, fleeing from their land which is on the brink of devastation. As fate would have it and early into the voyage in search of their new home, Finn is seriously injured, and it is not known if he will recover, so his friend, a young girl named Seren, sensing the plight of the sword which could befall the wrong hands, escapes the ship they are on and therein begins a treacherous adventure, one that leads Seren down a road where she is challenged at every turn, by witchery and strange craft, dwarves and spriggans, people and creatures who want to possess the sword to serve their own ends. Drawn by the force of the sword and her charge to protect it, Seren must navigate dangerous waters in order to find a place where the sword can finally rest safely until the day its rightful owner claims it. Excellently written, vividly portrayed, The Doomsong Legend keeps you wondering where and how this will all end. Clearly, there is a sequel in the offing, and we look forward to reading it.
